Matthias was the person chosen to replace Judas to make up the full complement of twelve apostles. According to the Acts of the Apostles, the apostles prayed and cast lots to determine who would be selected.
After this mention, Matthias disappears from the historic record. However, the story of his selection states that he was "a witness to the resurrection" and that he had followed Jesus "during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us."
Matthias reminds us that the heart of discipleship is bearing witness--sharing the good news of what we have experienced in our own lives from God.Image: St. Matthias (from the workshop of Simone Martini, Italian, c. 1300); public domain
